Growing Up with Heart Disease: Journeys
A collaborative conference by and for families and healthcare professionals
Growing Up with Heart Disease: Journeys is an opportunity to learn from the experts such as: physicians, psychologists, nurses, psychologists, researchers, parents, and heart children, youth, and adults.
- Families and healthcare professionals sharing and learning from each other’s experiences of caring for children and youth with congenital, acquired, and electrical heart disease.
- Special programs for youth (ages 13 to 19) and children (ages 6 months to 12 years)
- Plenary speakers, concurrent sessions, and tours.
- A special presentation by youth on growing up with heart disease from the Hearts of Gold Youth Program.
Healthcare professionals, healthcare professional students, parents, youth, and children of all ages are welcome. We hope you will join us for this year’s conference.

The Children’s Program for Growing Up with Heart Disease: Journeys will be available for infants (6 months or older)* and children up to age 12. The program welcomes children with heart disease and their siblings. Qualified early childhood educators will care for and have a variety of fun age-appropriate arts and activities for the kids. You will be able to relax and enjoy the conference while your child/children play and have lots of fun! The $50 charge per child for 2 days covers conference hours on Saturday and Sunday. Please sign up early as the Children’s Program fills up every year.
CHN also requires a child registration form.
CHN will send a child’s registration form by email. This form will be made available to you digitally and printable PDF and must be completed and sent back to us for verification and confirmation in order to register your child. Please check your email confirmation for details and instructions.
If you are from out of town and have scheduled appointment around the time of the conference in the Heart Clinic try to make the appointment adjacent to the conference weekend. This may then qualify you to then stay at the Ronald McDonald House, if space is available.
*Infants in arms are welcome during the conference. As a courtesy to other conference participants, we ask that parents give restless babies immediate attention.
The Children’s Program is located at the GF Strong Building, on 28th Avenue, across from the Chan Centre at BC Children’s Hospital.There will be balloons to mark the entrance area down the driveway.
Youth Program at the Conference
The conference has a stream that is designed just for teens. The Hearts of Gold Youth Program welcomes all youth with heart disease and their siblings aged 13-19 years. The conference offers sessions tailored to interests of youth and provides a forum for expressing their ideas related to living with heart disease. Teens will enjoy a range of activities at the conference and have a social event in the evening. The registration fee is $35 for all day Saturday, including the Saturday night event.
Registration and Fees
The conference has been greatly subsidized so all families will have the opportunity to attend. The fees for the entire conference (2 days) are:
- Adult: $75
- Healthcare professional: $150
- Healthcare student: $75
- Youth: $35
- Child: $50
- Attendance to all sessions
- Continental breakfast and lunch on both Saturday and Sunday
- Wine and Cheese reception on Saturday
Registered participants will receive the conference schedule including detailed conference proceedings and name tag at the Registration and Information desk. The desk will be located in the foyer of the Chan Centre for Family Health Education, on the BC Children’s Hospital site. A detailed conference program will be available on-line for you to print and bring with you to the conference.

Cancellations will be accepted prior to September 30, 2017. Registration fees, less a $25 administration charge will be refunded after the conference. Cancellations received after September 30, 2017 will not be refunded. Substitute registrations are welcome.
Financial Assistance for Families and Health Professional Students:
The philosophy of the Children’s Heart Network is to ensure that as many families as possible will benefit from our programs and supports. To this end, a limited amount of funds are available to ensure BC heart children, youth and family members in financial need are able to attend this years conference. We also extend this policy to health professional students.
Requests for financial assistance will be considered on a first come first serve basis and must be made prior to the conference. Please contact email@example.com for more information.
Conference Location & Accommodations
The conference will be held at the Chan Centre for Family Health Education, BC Children’s Hospital. Minutes from beautiful downtown Vancouver, the conference is located 20 minutes from Vancouver International Airport with easy access to accommodation, shopping, and spectacular beaches. There are many attractions to take in during your time in the city: Stanley Park, Gastown, Science World, Grouse Mountain, Capilano Suspension Bridge, plus much more. Parking at BC Children’s is a “pay-by-stall number” system, and pay parking is in effect 24 hours a day. There is limited free street parking available, please make sure that you respect the signage for those spots, as you will get ticketed or towed if you park outside the times.
